Modelsandanalyticaltechniquesaredevelopedtoevaluatetheperformanceoftwovariationsof singlebuffers(conventionalandbufferrelaxationsystem)multiplequeuessystem.Intheconventional system,eachqueuecanhaveatmostonecustomeratanytimeandnewlyarrivingcustomersfindthe bufferfullarelost.Inthebufferrelaxationsystem,thequeuebeingservedmayhavetwocustomers, while eachof the other queuesmayhave atmost one customer.ThomasY.S.Lee developed a state-dependentnon-linearmodelofuncertaintyforanalyzingarandompollingsystemwithserver breakdown/repair,multi-phase service, correlated input processes, and single buffers.The statedependentnon-linearmodelofuncertaintyintroducedinthispaperallowsustoincorporatecorrelated arrivalprocesseswherethecustomerarrivalratedependsonthelocationoftheserverand/orthe server’smodeofoperationintothepollingmodel.Theauthorallowsthepossibilitythattheserver isunreliable.Specifically,whentheservervisitsaqueue,Leeassumesthatthesystemissubject totwotypesoffailures:queue-dependent,andgeneral.Generalfailuresareobserveduponserver arrivalataqueue.Buttherearetwopossibilitiesthataqueue-dependentbreakdown(ifoccurs)can beobserved;(i)isobservedimmediatelywhenitoccursand(ii)isobservedonlyattheendofthe currentservice.Inbothcases,arepairprocessisinitiatedimmediatelyafterthequeue-dependent breakdownisobserved.Theauthor’smodelallowsthepossibilityoftheserverbreakdowns/repair processtobenon-stationaryinthenumberofbreakdowns/repairstoreflectthatbreakdowns/repairs orcustomerprocessingmaybeprogressivelyeasierorharder,orthattheyfollowamoregeneral learningcurve.ThomasY.S.Leewillshowthathismodelencompassesavarietyofexamples.He wasabletoperformbothtransientandsteadystateanalysis.Thesteadystateanalysisallowsusto computeseveralperformancemeasuresincludingtheaveragecustomerwaitingtime,lossprobability, throughputandmeancycletime.
